Ear Correction
An ear correction, also known as otoplasty, is a procedure that corrects protruding ears by reshaping the ear cartilage and positioning the ears closer to the head. Protruding ears are a congenital deformity of the external ear. In themselves, protruding ears do not present any functional disadvantage (hearing ability is identical to non-protruding ears). During an ear correction, a combination of a less pronounced fold (antihelix) and/or a relatively large bowl (concha) is corrected through an incision behind the ear to achieve a natural result.
How does the procedure work?
The correction is usually performed as a day procedure (without overnight stay), under general anesthesia for young children and local or general anesthesia for adolescents/adults. Through a small incision behind the ear, the cartilage is folded/refined and, if necessary, the bowl is reduced in size. This is followed by a pressure bandage. The operation typically takes 1-2 hours.
Is this treatment suitable for you?
The procedure is suitable for children and adults who are bothered by the position of their ears or experience discomfort due to remarks and/or bullying. For children, correction can typically be performed from primary school age (usually around 5-6 years), when the ear cartilage is sufficiently developed.
