Scar Correction
Everyone has scars — some larger or more noticeable than others. They usually fade spontaneously over time, but some scars remain wide (hypertrophic) or thickened (keloid), may itch or feel disturbing. Scar correction combines various treatments to soften, refine or make the appearance of such a scar less noticeable. Unfortunately, a scar can never disappear completely, but it usually becomes significantly less noticeable. Because scars take an average of about a year to mature, it is often advisable to wait 6–12 months before planning a definitive correction.
How does the procedure work?
The approach is determined by the type, shape, thickness, color and location of the scar. Possible options include:
- Conservative methods such as pressure therapy and silicone sheets/gel to temper the scar.
- Injections with corticosteroids for thickened/hypertrophic or keloidal scars.
- Surgical correction (e.g. re-excision, Z-/W-plasty or contracture release) to improve direction, tension or shape; lipofilling can be used for contour defects.
- Non-surgical skin improvement, such as fractional laser or medical needling, often in a series of sessions to gradually improve texture and color. With these techniques, anesthesia is usually applied to limit discomfort.
During the consultation, a custom plan is developed. Sometimes one technique is chosen, often a combination for the best result.
Is this treatment suitable for you?
Scar correction is suitable when a scar is functionally or aesthetically disturbing: for example, due to widening, thickening or a contour defect, or because the location makes it highly visible. Complaints such as itching, sensitivity or hindrance in daily life can also be a reason to consider treatment.
