Skin Lesion
Skin lesions are common and usually benign, such as moles, lipomas (fatty lumps), or pigmented spots. Sometimes they cause discomfort (e.g., rubbing against clothing) or are cosmetically bothersome; in these cases, removal may be considered. However, some lesions are not benign: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma together form the majority of skin tumors, and melanoma also occurs. Sun exposure often plays a role; therefore, sun protection remains important. It’s best to have suspicious spots evaluated in a timely manner.
How does the procedure work?
The approach depends on the type of lesion. Many procedures are performed under local anesthesia as day treatments (you go home the same day). The area to be treated is marked and disinfected, then the lesion is removed with a safe margin and the wound is closed plastically. If indicated, the tissue is sent to the anatomopathological laboratory for analysis. We close smaller defects directly. For larger skin cancers, a reconstructive technique may be necessary. Some superficial skin lesions can first be approached non-surgically (e.g., cryotherapy, light therapy/PDT, or chemo ointment). For melanoma, the treatment is surgical excision.
Is this treatment suitable for you?
Skin lesions are treated when they cause functional (rubbing, irritation) or aesthetic disturbances, or when there is doubt about their benign nature. Consider a raised spot that sits right under a bra strap, a noticeable spot on the face, or a subcutaneous lump that causes discomfort. Medical examination is advised for lesions that change in color, shape, or size.
