Eyelid Surgery
An eyelid correction, also called blepharoplasty, refreshes your appearance by correcting excess skin and/or fat on the upper and/or lower eyelids. This reduces a heavy, tired appearance or bags under the eyes and restores an open, refreshed look. For the upper eyelids, skin (and if necessary some fat or muscle) is removed; for the lower eyelids, fat pockets are removed or redistributed and, if needed, some skin is tightened. The incisions are discreetly placed in the natural fold of the upper eyelid or under the lash line—sometimes even on the inside of the lower eyelid, so there is no external scarring. An eyelid correction can also be combined with, for example, a brow lift or fine lipofilling if this provides a better overall result.
How does the procedure work?
Beforehand, the eyelids are marked and the anesthesia is determined. An upper eyelid correction is usually performed under local anesthesia as a day treatment; a lower eyelid correction can be performed under local or general anesthesia (often day admission). Through small incisions in the fold (upper) or under the lash line/on the inside (lower), the surgeon removes or redistributes the excess tissue and closes the skin with fine sutures or skin strips. Often you can open your eyes immediately after the procedure; wear glasses instead of contact lenses during the first week. The procedure usually takes three quarters of an hour to two hours, depending on the plan.
Is this treatment suitable for you?
This procedure is intended if you suffer from overhanging skin (makeup problems, heavy feeling towards the evening, sometimes even visual impairment) or from bags/swelling under the eyes. Bags can also occur at a younger age due to hereditary factors. During the consultation, we determine what the main cause is (skin, fat, brow position, or volume loss in the midface) and which approach will give the most natural result.
