(Pseudo) Gynecomastia
Male breast enlargement or gynecomastia is a condition where men develop more than normal breast volume. Pseudogynecomastia involves fat accumulation in the breast rather than glandular growth. Both forms can be treated. The causes include hormonal fluctuations (puberty, advanced age) and sometimes medication or other conditions. Besides affecting self-image, this condition may also be accompanied by specific pain complaints.
How does the procedure work?
First, we determine which tissue is predominant. Often, a breast ultrasound and, if indicated, an endocrinological evaluation are performed. This clarifies whether glandular tissue is present and if an underlying cause needs to be ruled out.
The technique depends on the findings:
- In pseudogynecomastia, excess fat is removed through liposuction.
- In gynecomastia (glandular tissue), the gland is removed through a small semi-circular incision at the bottom of the areola; liposuction can be combined with this for a smooth transition. Excess skin can be corrected separately if necessary.
The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia, usually as day surgery (you go home the same day) or with 1 night of hospitalization, depending on the extent. Sutures are typically dissolvable, and wounds are often closed with skin adhesive, allowing you to carefully shower soon after.
